A New Way of Making Money Selling Books Online

There is nothing new about selling books online. But I bet you think I’m talking about selling some old used book or textbook on EBay to make an extra dollar or two on your inventory. I’m not. In fact, the method I’m talking about doesn’t involve you having an inventory at all. So what is this new way of making money selling books online? Let’s dive in, and let’s make 2019 a profitable year together.

The Method

Now, I mentioned that my method does not involve having an inventory. How? Affiliate Marketing. If you are not familiar with affiliate marketing, I’ll give you a snapshot. You would be promoting someone else’s product through your own content (such as a blog, social media, or email list) and making a commission on each sale. It sounds a little complicated at first, but it’s really very simple. I am here to help you get started. I will tell you that we’ll be finding these books on common websites. (with this particular niche, it’ll help if you Love Reading)

Your first step will be creating a website. There are a lot of places that sell domain names such as Go Daddy and Namecheap. You will also need to host your website. You find my number one suggestion for web hosting here. If you want to, you can create a free domain through the platform, you can. However, you may have better luck with a regular “.com” domain. Once you have your website, you can move on to the next step.

Where to Find Books

Thousands of books are sold through Amazon, and it’s easy to sign up for their affiliate program. BUT, I do not recommend the Amazon Affiliate Program as your only avenue to promote books. Their program is back and forth when it comes to E-Books commissions. If you need an affiliate program, Amazon is the perfect starting point, but make sure you read closely their commission fee schedule.

Barnes and Noble also has an affiliate program, and I recommend theirs. The B & N program is through a third party, CJ Affiliates (A.K.A. Commission Junction), which you should consider signing up for anyway. Several businesses use CJ for their affiliate programs, and for good reason. They have on-time commission payouts, and everything is streamlined. It makes keeping a solid eye on your activities a breeze.

Speaking of CJ Affiliates, another notable program would be the Ebooks.com Affiliate Program, and theirs is also through CJ. The positive thing about their program is the fact that ebooks are becoming more and more popular, as people are finding paperback books to be more of a bulky burden. Another would be their commission structure. They have a tiered structure, meaning- the more you sell, the more you earn.

Here is a snapshot of that structure straight from the website:

  • Up to $499 commission earned = 8% commission
  • $500-$999 commission earned = 10% commission
  • $1000-$1999 commission earned = 12% commission
  • $2000+ commission earned = 15% commission

They provide plenty of links for your website, as well as banners, and images to used to advertise your book of choice.

Put It Into Action

Now that you’ve put together a website, and found a few affiliate programs, it’s time to build on your content. If you go out there looking for any affiliate training, you may get weighed down by their explanation of SEO and getting traffic. It may not help you if you get overwhelmed. In the training over at Wealthy Affiliate (See my full review here), they teach that you need to first and foremost focus on content.

When you are building up your website, focus on writing about the books that you love first. Really get in depth of what you like, what you dislike, and why your readers can’t live without reading them. Maybe go with why you decided to read the book in the first place. If you’re going to advertise a few books in the same article, be sure to keep them in the same genre.

After this, you can start putting your focus on keywords to drive traffic. Another method used by Wealthy Affiliate is one I haven’t seen anywhere else, they call it the low hanging fruit method, and it works. After you begin getting more traffic, more and more people will be interested in the books you recommend. They may even seek out your opinion on books that they plan on buying. This means you have become an authority on book reviewing. Just remember, as is true with any author, the reader comes first.

Bonus: The Mailing List

After you have put the time in on your website, you can start to put together a mailing list. Just remember that if you are going to get people to trust you enough to give you their email, you need to put the time into keeping that trust. This means you need to deliver content regularly.

There are several autoresponders out there. I recommend Aweber. Keep up with a newsletter, talk about a genre and then recommend a book. Or you can even start your own book club! Online book club are growing in popularity. You can even start a book club Facebook group.

Once you get a brand started, the sky is your limit. Just put in the work. Before you know it, you will have yourself a book selling business like no other.

What Have We Learned Here

Affiliate marketing is a very real business opportunity for those interested in selling books. If you want to learn more about it with me, I recommend the Online Entreprenuer Certification.

The process is simple: pick a niche, build a website, drive traffic, and make money. It does, however, take patience and hard work. You can also learn more about how to use email marketing and social media to up your revenue stream. I hope you can take this and make something great! What do you think about this method?

My Favorite Side Hustles From Home – Extra Cash Never Hurts

I have been working from home for some time now. Up until recently, I was working for a company that kept a close eye on the time I spent working. Which was fine, because my job was always keeping me busy. There was the occasional clock out, usually for lunch. During that time I didn’t want to be on the phone, so how could I make a couple extra bucks without leaving my house or getting in the way of my regular job? Let’s dive right in to my favorite side hustles from home.

Freelance Services

I like writing, and when I get going, I can write about almost anything. So I found a couple sites that I really like to used to earn for my writing. I use Upwork and Textbroker. In my opinion, Upwork has a more aesthetically pleasing platform, and they treat their freelancers with more of an “employee” style.

I would even go as far as saying that they want the freelancers to present themselves as business owners. I like it, and it’s nice to make a little extra money that way. However, for someone like me, who did not attend a four-year university and I haven’t earned any professional writing accolades, I felt like I probably wasn’t able to “sell” myself like others could. BUT, I still managed to get work! Even when I felt like I was overcharging.

Textbroker is set up a little different. When you first sign up, you are asked to provide a writing sample. They ask you to write about something you enjoy. I chose to write about a local brewery that I really love. Then they rate your writing sample, and show you to the work you can choose from. The higher you are rating, the higher you get paid. Just keep in mind that the higher rating also comes with higher expectations, so be prepared for scrutiny. I like the platform because you are continuously being rated. So even if you started with a lower rating, there is always room for improvement.

If you are more of a creative type, you can also use Upwork. Offer services such as graphic design, illustration, web design, and more! You can also check out Fiverr to offer these services. That is probably one of the most popular platforms for creative freelancers right now. Personally, I’ve never sold on Fiverr, but I have used services on there for logo design (twice!), and I even paid someone to set up one of my Pinterest accounts.

Be sure to get a good idea at what you are worth. Look around at others who offer similar service, and check out their experience. Do not undersell. (Write that down and keep it where you can see it) Do everything you can to make yourself stand out, even if your don’t have as much experience as your peers. Honestly, 8 out of 10 times I will choose the person with the better looking profile and the more pleasant demeanor, over the person claiming that they have been in the industry for 10+ years with the condescending tone.

If you’re looking to offer services to someone who owns a website who needs a little help with WordPress, or even Search Engine Optimization, the training here can really pay off in the future. Sure it costs money for a premium membership, but a little investment now can pay off huge in the future.

Survey Says – Surveys Are Still Around!

When I was looking for extra ways to make a little case, I would have these ads pop-up for surveys. I felt annoyed. In the past (years ago!), when I would take surveys it took forever to work toward a $5 Amazon gift card. Half the time, I didn’t even qualify for the survey and it amounted to a lot of wasted time.

Boy how things have changed! The survey platforms around these days are not only intuitive and clean, but they allow for much higher earnings! The best part is, you can have the money sent straight to PayPal, instead of working hard for a gift card that you may not use. My favorite is Survey Junkie. It’s so easy to use, and the threshold of $10 is considerably low if you’re looking to cash out as often as possible.

My other favorite is UserTesting.com. This one is a little different from your usual “survey” site. On User Testing, you review websites and applications. Your microphone is required, as you are required to talk your way through and provide your opinion as you use the website or app. Also, your screen is recorded during the test. This one pays out pretty well in my opinion. If you’re consistent, you get more options. I once made $30 in just a few hours on this platform. Cha ching!

Transcription – Do You Have A Sharp Ear & Quick Fingers?

This one may actually be my least favorite of these suggestions. (The least favorite of my top four is still pretty good, just sayin) Here is why: it’s really not for everyone. You can make a decent buck through platforms like Rev and Allegis, but it requires a lot. If you are a slow typist, it can take a very long time to transcribe some audio. Even longer if that audio is hard to understand. There’s a constant pause and play if you just can’t keep up.

You need absolute silence. Some audio is so hard to understand, so any background noise can seriously throw you off. For some of us, silence is a luxury, and if you don’t have a home office it can be hard to track down.

The amount you make per hour fully depends on your skill. I have been able to get a little spending money from transcription, and I can’t complain about that. When you don’t need to dip into your average weekly budget to go see a movie, then I’d say that side hustle is worth it.

Building A Website – Not Just For Tech Majors

Now for my favorite on the list. If you have a hobby, you can build a website, and write about what you love! WordPress is the leader in web design. You don’t need to be a tech genius, or know any complicated coding. With thousands of themes to choose from, and done-for-you plugins, your website is just a few clicks away.

You can even do this for free! If you go through my #1 recommended platform, your free account comes with two websites on a free domain. If you think you can’t make money with a free domain, you are wrong! Your free account would also come with up to 30 searches on a keyword research tool. These 30 searches are more than enough to get you some traffic to your website and start making money. Again that is a free way to make money writing about something you love!

Now, there are so many people making good side hustle money through a website. But did you know that there are hundreds of people who have built a business with their website, making a full time income? That’s a whole other story. With the right training, hosting, and up building community, you can build so much more than just “side hustle” income. You can build a future! I encourage you to read this blog post from a successful online mentor, he’s been in the online business world for over 13 years. This dude knows what he’s talking about.

Are You Ready To Do the Side Hustle?

Weezer has recently said that you Can’t Knock the Hustle, and these words ring more true today than they did in 1996 when Jay-Z said the same thing. The truth is, EVERYONE is looking for a little extra to play with these days. There are also plenty of ways to make money if you’re willing to leave your house. There’s Uber, Lyft, Wag! (if you’re an active dog lover), Instacart, Task Rabbit, and much more that I can’t even think of right now! But it’s just not as easy to fit these in to your life if you need to make your money from home. What are your favorite side hustles? Feel free to share in the comments!

The Training At Wealthy Affiliate – In-Depth & Made For Everyone

The first thing I noticed as I began the expertly laid out training, is the thoroughness and the lack of an extra sales pitch. SO MANY people have created their very own affiliate marketing “training,” and it’s nothing more than a sales pitch asking you to become an affiliate for their program. Let me tell you about my last failed attempt at finding affiliate marketing training before I finally found Wealthy Affiliate.

The title was something along the lines of “The Proven Thing That Helped Me Make 100k in One Year.” or something LIKE that. See, I don’t even have to remember the exact title because they’re all the same! These titles have a certain formula and they’re mostly traps. Anywho, this so-called training was just a very elaborate sales pitch for a popular money making scheme. He also put together a “made for you sales pitch” that was supposedly used to get others to sign up for the same scheme. I found a few problems with this.

First, he tried to play on the “get-rich-quick” idea. But tried to tell you the it doesn’t happen overnight. Which brings me to number two, he pretended that this would be your own business. And lastly, this “business” requires that you work in the Make Money Online niche. This just isn’t fair. If you’re a beginner, you’re likely not seasoned in making money online. It felt a bit unethical to be told to go out there and round up traffic by claiming that you have the secret to making money online. My purpose in this long-winded rant is to show the giant contrast between training like this, and the Wealthy Affiliate University.

In-Depth and Legit

The training through Wealthy Affiliate is real! The main course is known as the Online Entrepreneur Certification. It is made up of five levels, and they are thorough! Within the first couple lessons you will have a website built and a niche picked. They train you to work in any niche, not just the Make Money Online niche (unless of course that is what you choose to work with). While they do have an amazing affiliate program, they don’t pressure you to be an affiliate. You are instructed how to find hundreds of affiliate programs online, all targeting your passions, hobbies, and business ideas.

Ever wanted to be an expert in SEO? With the help of Wealthy Affiliate, you can! And this is just the main training course.

They also offer an affiliate boot camp, weekly live training on several topics, training by some top people in the industry, case studies, and so much more. The owners of the website, Kyle and Carson, are always creating side training on several topics including E-commerce, email marketing, SEO, and other topics to help you become an expert online. You have plenty of training available to really become a successful online entrepreneur.

WordPress Site Building & Web Hosting – Made for Newbies

I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t know anything about building a website. Coding, HTML, all of that jazz is not everyone’s expertise. It shouldn’t have to be for you to be successful. They use WordPress which is by far the leading platform in building a website. It is so simple to use, and when you are a Premium member, you have access to over 3k theme designs. It is the easiest way to create a beautiful website, and that will be your basis for your business. This has to be good!

The W.A. web hosting platform is incredible. They offer site security, site speed, and website backups every 24 hours. Your premium account includes up to 25 websites on your own domain, and 25 websites on a free domain. That is up to 50 websites total! It is perfect for those who consider themselves stunted when it comes to technology, like myself. This website is over 13 years old, and still growing, so they know what they’re doing!

The Wealthy Affiliate Community – Thousands In Your Corner

I mentioned Kyle and Carson earlier, they are the owners of W.A. They believe that community over competition builds success. Both of them really emphasize the benefits of being involved with the community. Kyle will always remind you that reaching out to other is in your best interest. There is room for all of us on the success train.

Everyone is encouraged to reach out to fellow members when we have questions. It is such an amazing perk. You may have your run-ins from time to time with a less than pleasant member. But they are usually quickly reminded that a negative attitude isn’t welcome there. Before you know it you’ll have people commenting on your page, cheering on your accomplishments, helping you improve your websites, and giving you that extra inspiration to move forward and not give up.

Many training programs offer access to a Facebook group. This is so much more, what you get from this community is valuable and unique. I’ll be honest with you. When I first found this website, I was skeptical. The training was great and it brought me here, but I decided to stay because of the support of the community. I’ve never seen anything like it, when you’re here, you’re part of something BIG!

The Methods to Make Your Money

Slow and steady win the race. WA doesn’t claim that you will walk away from your first month with a six-figure business. That’s not how it works, deep down we all know that, but somehow we still get curious when you see “you can make thousands of dollars in less than a month.” Here they tell you that you WILL Make Money if you follow the training, but the time varies, and that is exactly the truth.

They want you to succeed ethically . Believe me, I would love it if I could make money overnight, but I also know that I love it when my money comes from hard work and dedication. Work hard, and follow the training within Wealthy Affiliate and you will Make Money. Easy as that. Thankfully for all of us, the investment into the premium membership is a very real investment into your business and your future. Many people will complain about the $49 per month, but if you take full advantage of the perks you will find that this is a very light investment. When you go for the yearly cost, you pay less than a dollar a day. That’s unheard of! Also, you cannot forget about the in-house keyword research tool. In my opinion it is the best and most comprehensive tool out there, and it is such a vital part of your research.

About Me

Hey there! I am so happy you’re here. Welcome to The Productive Pineapple. Here we discuss the impact that productivity can have on your life, your business, and your financial future. Here we’ll talk about making money, the REAL impact of social media, importance of creating proactive habits, time management, reaching goals, and SO MUCH MORE.

I’m sure you have heard the old saying “time is money.” Nonsense. Time is money if money is what’s valuable in your life. The real saying should be “time is VALUABLE.” If you want to cherish money, then sure, you can say that time is money. But that may not be the case for everyone, and yes, money will be involved because we need it to live. It is a fact of life. But we don’t need to revolve our life around it.

I will use myself as an example here. My spouse and my son are my world, I cherish them beyond money, big houses, and fancy things. As I mentioned before, money is vital, and we cannot get around the fact that we need it for our day-to-day. If I work smarter, and not harder, then I can help contribute to our expenses while still allowing myself to spend the majority of my time on what I value, my family. This can mean streamlining my business, earning passive income, working at flexible time, and making the most of my time online. It can also mean scheduling my time effectively, making the most of downtime, and setting daily, weekly, or even yearly goals. Whatever it takes to focus on what I love.

It’s pretty simple really. I want to help you to do the same. If we keep going into examples of the “time is valuable” model, we can use the example of Betty. Betty’s passion is travel, it’s what she values the most. Seeing the sights is so tiny in comparison to rush she gets when she soaks in the culture of each stop. She wants to eat and drink everything that the locals suggest, and she wants to see the amazing animals, swim in the pristine beaches, or take in the local art scene. It’s exhilarating and it feeds her soul.

If she gets one week off per year at her 9-5, and even feels somewhat guilty asking for that, she may leave the country once every few years. Meaning she will have to take one of those one week see-it-all but see nothing vacations. She’ll get all of her touristy pictures for Instagram, and she will be able to say that visited 4 countries in one trip, but she won’t get much more than that. She wants more.

If I can help her learn to work smarter, not harder, then maybe she can find little ways here and there to reach her goals. It may not be in a week, or even a year, but I hope I can help someone similar to this fictitious character look back while sipping on a local cocktail with a view of the clear blue water in Bermuda, and think “I’m glad I got the push I needed so I can spend my time on what I value, traveling.” This is what my dream is for this blog.

So stick around. Reach out to me. Let me know what your dreams are, and together let’s be a couple of productive pineapples.
